WHY SUMMER IS THE PERFECT TIME TO WORK ON YOUR BUSINESS
1. You’ll have the space to focus on your business
If you are like the majority of service-based business owners, the reality is you know you need to work on your business, but clients always come first. Therefore, as your business becomes more successful and busier, it’s harder to find the time and space to focus on your own business. Summer is very often a period of time where things slow down (unless you are a business where summer is your peak). This is usually due to a combination of things. For example, more people are taking holidays so that might result in you having fewer client meetings and less emails in your inbox. The majority of business conferences, events and networking will take a break over Summer so that could free up space in your calendar. Given that lots of people are away, it also might be a time that you strategically have decided not to run a launch or a major marketing campaign,
It might be for one or numerous reasons that your business is quieter in the Summer and this makes Summer the perfect time to work on your business.
2. You are mid-way through your annual plan and now have more information
Depending where you live this may or may not apply for you. However, I’m based in the Northern Hemisphere, in England, and so by the time Summer hits, we’re halfway through the calendar year. This makes Summer the perfect time to work on your business because you are now midway through your annual plan and have more information.
At the beginning of the year, when you set your annual goals and created your annual plan, you did it with the information you had at the time and with the best of intentions. But now things are different. You know what is and isn’t working. You know what you do and don’t enjoy. You can assess what revenue has really come into the business and what marketing led to those sales.
All of that information may mean you have work on your business and revise your plan for the rest of your year or it could mean there is something specific you work on during the quieter summer months.
3. You still have plenty of time left to influence the year
As just discussed, Summer, in the Northern Hemisphere, comes mid-year and that gives you a whole load of information to use if looked back on properly. But equally, there is still enough time to make a difference to the year. Depending on when you are working on your business, it may be that you have four or five months left of the year, which is plenty of time to make a huge difference. This is especially true for businesses where Q4 is their golden quarter and whilst only being 25% of the year time-wise, can be more valuable in terms of revenue (anywhere between 35 – 60%).

What to work on during the summer
As you’ve seen, there are multiple reasons why Summer is the perfect time to work on your business, but what should you be working on. As a business owner, there is so much you could be doing, and even with a bit more time on the hands the reality is you can’t do everything. However, here are some things you can do to work on your business.

Create a scalable offer
If scaling your business has been a desire for a while and you’ve struggle to get round to making it a reality then that’s a perfect thing to do during the quieter Summer. Now, with more space on your calendar, you can finally sit down and think about what scalable offer is right for your business and create it. If you’d like help with choosing, creating and launching your first scalable offer then Fully Booked and Scaling is for you.
Batch create your marketing – If you know that Summer is the quiet before the storm, then it makes sense to use the quiet period to help you be prepared for the storm. During busier periods, you’ll want to be freeing up as much time as possible for income-generating activities (aka delivering, working with clients etc). So it makes sense in your quieter periods to batch your marketing in advance so that you aren’t having to set aside time for marketing whilst your busy, but that your marketing continues, because yes consistency is key. Whether your are writing blog posts, creating YouTube videos, recording podcast episodes, sending emails, or posting on social media virtually all of that marketing can be created and scheduled in advance so make the most of that.
That’s it. You now know why summer is the perfect time to work on your business.
When used well, having a slightly quieter summer where you can work on your business rather than in your business can be a blessing in disguise. By working on your business in the ways shown it can mean you have the time to be the CEO your business needs and put your business in a great position to make the most of the end of the year.
