If I asked you right now, “Is your revenue goal high enough to pay yourself…

“Annual planning isn’t just for big businesses”. It’s a sentence I’ve had to say many times over the years because, for some reason, some small business owners seem to have got it into their head that annual planning is corporate and just for big businesses. That is so far from the truth! In reality small businesses need annual planning even more than big businesses, but yes, there is a difference in what annual planning as a big business and small business consists of. Keep on reading to find out why annual planning isn’t just for big businesses, and how small businesses can gain so much from annual planning.

WHY ANNUAL PLANNING ISN’T JUST FOR BIG BUSINESSES
Where The Myth ‘Annual Planning Is Just For Big Businesses’ Has Come From
A lot of small business owners, earlier in their working life, worked for someone else “in corporate”. Then, when they leave corporate to run their own business, they decide to reject all things corporate – including annual planning. All of a sudden, annual planning is classed as something big businesses do, and often if someone has the experience of spending ages preparing an annual plan that then basically gathered dust, it can be viewed as a waste of time.
There is no denying that some annual planning in big businesses is a waste of time, but that is more to do with how the plan is created and how the plan is followed, rather than the annual planning process as a thing in itself.
And that is what small business owners need to focus on. It’s not about doing annual planning exactly how a big business does it, but having an annual planning process that makes sense for small businesses
How Annual Planning Looks Different for Small Businesses
Annual planning for a small business is different. Firstly, there is less people involved and that makes it can happen a lot faster. You aren’t having to make a plan that is that needs to have the agreement or be signed off by shareholders, directors or numerous departments. Instead, the likelihood is it will be you, the business owner, making the plan, with possibly a bit of support from other people in your team.
For small businesses, it isn’t about making it unnecessarily complicated or excessively long. You don’t need giant spreadsheets or lengthy reports. The aim is to keep the plan as streamlined as possible, but ensure you have covered all of the key areas, which do need to be considered when planning. The ultimate aim is to make a working document, rather than something that gathers dust. Something that will be continually referred to throughout the year and ensure the business uses its limited resources as efficiently and effectively as possible.
Why Small Businesses Need Annual Planning Even More Than Big Businesses
1. Resources Matter Even More
Let’s be honest, big businesses can be wasteful environments. People sit in endless meetings wasting time, and there are some questionable financial decisions made in big companies. Whereas, small businesses need to get the most out of all their limited resources. In order for this to happen, having a clear focus is key and planning will help ensure time, money and energy is used for maximum impact.
2. Gives The Business Owner Vital CEO Time
The CEO of a big business is just the CEO of the business. They don’t wear any other hats in the business and that means they can continually be looking at how the business is performing and ensuring decisions are being made to optimise performance. As a small business owner, the likelihood is you don’t have that luxury. You are likely to be wearing multiple hats in your business and so you don’t have as much time in CEO mode as you’d like.
Annual planning gives you the opportunity to properly be in CEO mode and work on your business. Firstly, annual planning will give you the opportunity to look at how your business is performing right now. You’ll have the opportunity to review your data and reflect on your experience (If you want help to get the most out of reflecting on the last year, check out my annual reflection guide here .
Then you’ll have the opportunity to properly think about where you want the business to go and the desired approach. There are so many ways to reach the same goal, but your approach will impact the resources you’ll need.

3. Helps The Business Owner To Build A Business On Their Terms
Success in business looks different to everyone. The likelihood is you don’t just care about hitting a financial goal by all means. You want to be able to do it in a way that works for you, and that doesn’t happen by accident. When you do annual planning, you can really think about what you are planning on doing in your business and whether that is truly aligned with the business and life you want. For example, annual planning can highlight when the business is going to demand you to be working at a time when you don’t want to be, or working more hours than you’d want to be.
Whether you have aims around when you work, where you work, who you work with or how much time off you have per year, annual planning will help you with that.
What You Need For Annual Planning As A Small Business
As already mentioned, annual planning for a small business is different to what annual planning for a big business is like. You won’t have lots of people, endless meetings and emails, and then ultimately a massive document. To successfully create an annual plan for a small business, you need 3 things:
One day dedicated to planning – Remember the point of annual planning is to have quality time in CEO mode. Whilst you could grab an hour here or there the most effective way to plan is by having a whole day.
A planning partner – To get the most effective plan, you need someone else to plan with. Ideally, someone who has a good knowledge of business, but isn’t in your business.
An annual planning framework – To get the most out of your day you need an annual planning framework that you can follow so you can ensure all of the key areas of covered, and you come out with a final document that is useful and will be used throughout the year ahead.
This combination of a day dedicated to planning, with an external planning partner and an annual planning framework to follow, is the most effective way to the strongest annual plan in the shortest amount of time.
And because of that I run Vision-to-Strategy CEO Days where I give business owners just that. They spend a day working with me (a business and marketing expert that is external to their business) and use my signature annual planning framework (which means you’ll have a plan and timeline to follow by the end of the day).

The Return-On-Investment from Annual Planning as a Small Business
As with everything in business, if you are dedicating time, energy and (possibly) money, then you want to ensure you are getting a good return-on-investment. As a small business owner, it might be tempting to think taking a day out of working in your business is too much or that paying to plan with someone (like me) is too much. But there is much value in annual planning. I’ve written more about why annual planning is the best investment you’ll make in your business here.
But here’s the quick version of the return-on-investment you’ll get from annual planning as a small business.
1 – You’ll make decisions faster and better – Annual planning helps you to make decisions faster as you’ll also have decided what your focus for the year is and what your approach is. That means that as opportunities come in you can quickly way up whether they are supporting or diverting you from your current plan. This means you’ll mean better decisions, make decisions faster and have more confidence in your decisions. This should mean you are saving time and making more money.
2 – Improve financial performance – Annual planning means you are taking the time to properly think about what you are selling, how you sell and how you will deliver. This level of planning will help you to increase sales and create more profit.
3 – Increase productivity and focus – Time is often the most precious asset in a small business (and not accounted for properly). Whether your business is just you, or you have a small team, you want to make sure that all people hours are used for maximum impact. Planning will mean everyone knows exactly what they should be focused on, which should maximise productivity.
That’s it. You now know why annual planning isn’t just for big businesses.
As you’ve read, annual planning really isn’t just for big businesses. Small businesses gain so much from annual planning, but the key is understanding what is and isn’t necessary. The annual planning process is as important as the actual plan. The point is to have valuable time working on the business, and being able to strategically think about how to use limited resources wisely over the upcoming year so that the overall business goals are achieved.
I really hope reading this has made you realise how important annual planning is and get you excited about creating an annual plan for your own business.
