DESIGN THE BREAKTHROUGH BUSINESS YEAR YOU TRULY WANT

Get Clear on Your Version of a Breakthrough Business Year

A breakthrough business year is a year of ‘considerable’ growth. Rather than a year that has incremental growth, it is a year where you are growing your business and properly taking it to another level.

A breakthrough business year will look different to every business owner. The clearer you can get about your version of a breakthrough business year is, the easier it will be for planning how to turn your dream into a reality.

Your breakthrough business year might include:

  • Hitting a specific revenue milestone
  • Achieving a certain level of profit or improving your profit margins
  • Being able to pay yourself a certain amount of money
  • Having more time freedom
  • Working with a certain type of client
  • Developing a stronger brand presence
  • Expanding your client/customer base nationally or internationally
  • Moving from one-to-one services to having a scalable offer
  • Generating a certain passive income or monthly recurring revenue figure.

As you can see, there are so many different ways your business could have a breakthrough year. It is vital if you want to design the breakthrough business year you truly want that you are brutally honest first about what that year looks like. Forget about what you think you should be aiming for based on what your business bestie, business mentor or someone else on the internet has said.

Take a moment to get clear on what your version of a breakthrough business year truly looks like and why achieving that version is so important to you. The clearer you can get on what you want to achieve and why in this stage, the easier everything else will be.

Review and Reflect on the last 12 months

Before planning for the year ahead, especially a breakthrough business year, it is vital that you properly look back. You need to understand your business’s current position and what has happened over the last 12 months to end up in this position.

Review and Reflect is the first part in my annual planning framework, and this involves you reviewing the data and reflecting on your experience. As a micro business owner, the figures alone aren’t enough. It might be that you had a record-breaking month, but the launching process exhausted you, the clients weren’t a great fit, or you ended up working day and night to deliver everything. By just looking at the numbers, you can easily think something was great, but it is only showing part of the picture.

By the end of your review and reflection, the aim is to have a really good understanding of your business’s current position and what has led to it being there. You’ll also want to have a very clear idea of what you will and won’t be bringing forward into the year ahead.

Turn your version of a breakthrough business year into solid goals

Your business’s current position is point A (where your business is right now) and now you want to create your point B (where you want your business to be). Look back at your version of a breakthrough business year and from that create some solid goals. The less goals you can have the better. Normally, when working with clients, most business owners will end up with 3 to 5 goals.

The key is to create goals that you can clearly tell if they’ve been achieved or not. Often adding numbers will help it to be clear if something has been achieved or not. For example, here are some goals where the numbers means it is either a yes or no.

  • Received 300K cash in the business
  • 70%+ of clients are international
  • Had over 1,000 people buy your course
  • 200+ attendees for your event

However, sometimes it might not make sense to quantify. For example:

  • Publish my first book
  • Create my first scalable offer
  • Run my first event

In all of the above, you could add quantities, but maybe for you, the breakthrough isn’t about the number of people who buy the book, sign ups for the scalable offer or attendee number your first event. Maybe the breakthrough is purely around you taking a step into new territories and creating/doing the thing.

Build Your Strategy

With your goals now defined it is time to concentrate on how you get from Point A (where you are ) to Point B (where you want to be). There will usually be multiple ways to reach a goal. Your responsibility is to work out the way you are going to approach achieving your goals – aka what your strategy is going to be.. For a breakthrough business year, you can’t just carry on exactly as you’ve been doing so far. Changes will need to be made in your business, and it is your job, as the CEO, to make strategic decisions around those changes.

Key areas you’ll need to consider are:

  • Offer Suite
  • Pricing
  • Marketing
  • Sales
  • Delivery
  • Operations
  • Finances

In every area, the focus should be on what changes need to be made (additions and removals) based on achieving your new goals. Often when working with clients to design their breakthrough business year, we’ll make changes such as:

  • Remove low-profit offers
  • Create new high-ticket, passive or monthly recurring revenue offers
  • Increase their prices
  • Stop using poor-performing marketing channels
  • Remove or reduce time-intensive marketing
  • Double down on high-performing marketing channels
  • Create new marketing funnels
  • Invest in new tech, team members or business owner support

Create Your Annual Timeline

At this point, you’ve made the strategic decisions, and now it is time to create your annual timeline. The annual timeline will enable you to map out what is happening in your business from different perspectives and ensure you have the necessary resources. Often, when putting an annual timeline there will be crunchpoints (where too much is happening at the same time) and you’ll have the opportunity to work out whether you move something or invest in more resources.

Having an annual timeline where you bring everything together means you can see the year as a whole. That can be daunting, but also when you have the right plan, it actually can make your business breakthrough year seem much more achievable. The annual timeline will give you the opportunity to map out launches, marketing campaigns, delivery windows, creation periods and holidays. You’ll get to see how everything fits, or doesn’t fit, together.

Monitoring and Quarterly Planning

At this point, you have designed your breakthrough business year. You’ve got clear goals, you make key strategic decisions and you’ve got a timeline for execution. However, to have a breakthrough business year, you can’t just follow your annual plan. You are going to need to stay in CEO mode all year. This means you are going to need to monitor your progress and do quarterly planning for optimisation and maximum efficiency.

Monitoring-wise, you’ll need to set key metrics to monitor based on your goals. For example, if your goal is to hit a certain revenue and/or profit level then you’ll need to regularly monitor your revenue and/or profit level. If your goal is to have 1,000+ people buy your course, then you’ll want to track your course sales.

Quarterly planning-wise, you’ll want to create a 12-week, 90-day, 3-month or quarterly plan which is takes into consideration how the previous quarters have performed and ensure you are still on track for your overall annual goals.

As a micro business owner, it can be tough to continually make the time to be in CEO mode and do the necessary monitoring and quarterly planning. It is too easy to get stuck working in your business and not on your business, which is why I offer 1:1 Business and Marketing Mentoring. With my 1:1 Business and Marketing Mentoring every month we’ll look at your key metrics and every quarter we’ll make a new quarterly plan. That combined with my support, training and accountability means you’ll continually implement, review and otimise your plan.

That’s it. You now know how to design the breakthrough business year you truly want.

Life is too short to not go after building the business you truly want or waiting years when you can achieve it in a year.
