HOW TO BE MORE CONFIDENT MAKING VIDEO CONTENT

1.Work out which type of video content you prefer making

There are a number of different ways that you can create videos to market your business and usually there will be one that you prefer more than others. This doesn’t mean that you love it, but just it is slightly more comfortable that the other types of video content.

In relation to video content there are a few options:

  • Length of the video (short versus long)
  • Recording style (live versus pre-recorded and edited)
  • Editing (edited or not edited)

Take a moment to think about how you feel about the different types of videos you can create and then rank them. For example, I predominately make three different types of videos and below I’ve put them in the relation to my preferences:

1) Live video recorded straight onto a social media platform with no editing

2) Short-form videos (TikTok videos / Instagram Reels) that I quickly edit on my phone

3) Long-form video that is often scripted beforehand and the edited afterwards (To put on YouTube or a webpage)

Now I want you to do the same. Getting a clear understanding of what you prefer is important when trying to be more confident with video content. Focus on creating the types of content you already feel the most confident with and then overtime you can look at building your confidence with the other types of videos.

2. Get the right equipment and get more comfortable using it

For some people all the equipment and tech that is needed to create videos can be overwhelming. There are lots of options when it comes to camera, lighting, microphones and editing software. Deciding what to invest in and then learning how to use it may seem overwhelming.

Equipment does make a difference in relation to the quality of your videos, but when you are first getting started you don’t need a lot. Start where you are and then you can upgrade your equipment as time goes on (if you want to).

Equipment for beginner

To get started you need the following:

  • A device to record your videos on (most people use their smartphone)
  • Some way of recording your sound (most people use their smartphone’s built-in microphone)
  • A way to edit your videos (if doing edited ones)
  • Lighting – If you have access to natural light you can start with that or for all my fellow Brits with dark homes I recommend buying a ring light. I’ve had a Neewer Dimmable 18″ Diameter for years.

I also bought a Zacro 360 Degree Rotation Mount Holder, which means that I can easily attach my phone and the rotation allows me to easily switch from being in the horizontal mode for YouTube videos and then being in portrait mode for social media content.

Upgrading for video equipment

If you want to upgrade then you can look at:

Microphone – Buy a lapel microphone that you can attach to your clothing (I have the Movo LV1 Lavalier Lapel Clip-on Omnidirectional Condenser Microphone.) I’ve also seen other people using a ‘podcasting’ microphone such as a The Blue Yeti.

Lighting – You can invest in a ring light (such as the Neewer Dimmable 18″ Diameter) or another popular option is to some buy two light boxes.

If you intended on creating videos on a social media platform, whether it be live videos or creating Reels, TikToks etc, then you should also get used to using those features within the apps. Each app will be slightly different and you want to get comfortable with the ones you will be using.

3. Make yourself feel physically as comfortable and confident as possible

At this point you know what types of videos you prefer making and you are confident with all of your equipment so it is time to get recording. Before hitting the record button, you should do everything you can to make yourself feel physically as comfortable and confident as possible.

Your recording space

If you are worrying about what people are seeing in the frame around you then you are going to be distracted. Set up your recording device and see what is in the frame. Ensure that you are happy with what others will be seeing.

Your appearance

After checking your recording, you should have a look at yourself. Are you as confident (as possible) about how you look?

4. Have a clear purpose for your video and talking points

Having a clear purpose for your video is a great way to be more confident when creating your videos. Before hitting record be sure that you understand why you are creating this video. The video should be playing a role in your overall marketing strategy, but the video should also have a purpose for the viewer. When you are clear about why you are making a video for a viewer then you can concentrate on how you are creating something of value and therefore need to show up. Videos are a great way of serving or helping others and for some being able to move the focus from ‘I’m creating a video to grow my business’ to ‘I’m creating a video to help X with Y’ can really help improve confidence.

If you video isn’t scripted then before hitting record I highly recommend you writing down what your key talking points so you have an outline for the video.
