WHY ANNUAL PLANNING IS THE BEST INVESTMENT YOU’LL MAKE IN YOUR BUSINESS

Investment isn’t just about money

It’s common when thinking about return-on-investment (ROI) to just think about the financial return. And so you might be thinking, “How can annual planning be the best investment I can make in my business?”. But as a solopreneur or micro business owner, return-on-investment isn’t just about money. It is about the investment of all of your resources: time, money and energy.

Yes, you want to ensure money is being used wisely and that the things you buy make a return. But, you also want to ensure the time and energy you, and your team, are spending is creating the best return-on-investment too.

Annual planning will help you to make a better return-on-investment on the money, time and energy you’ll spend across the whole year. Actions will be connected to your bigger goals, decisions will be made based on your overall strategy and you’ll spend less time getting distracted by shiny objects. Essentially, you’ll be proactive rather than reactive, everything will be aligned and working towards your ultimate goals. This minimises the wastage of time, energy and money, and ultimately helps you maximise revenue, minimise costs and create maximum profit.

Benefits of Annual Planning

1. Better Decision-Making

As a business owner, you are constantly having to make decisions and if you are honest, you might be wasting a lot of time and energy deliberating options. And by choosing the wrong decision, you could end up spending endless time, money and energy going down the wrong path.

Annual planning will help you to evaluate opportunities faster and make decisions with confidence. Whether a new idea or opportunity arises based on something you’ve come up with or you’ve been approached with, you’ll be able to ask yourself “Will this help the business achieve its main goals?” and “Does this fit with the current plan?”.  Answering those questions will help you to make a decision faster, make a more aligned decision, and have more confidence in your decision too.

2. Improved Financial Performance

A key part of the annual planning process involves looking at your finances and making predictions around revenue, expenditure, profit and cash flow. Mapping this out ahead of time will improve your financial performance. For example, now you won’t have vague financial goals, whether that be for a month, quarter or launch. Instead, you’ll have a good idea of what the business is spending, and therefore understand what revenue you need to generate in order to hit the desired level of profit.

In addition, annual planning will mean you are proactive about what you are selling and when. Being more proactive with your marketing in general, and especially with launches, will help you to generate more revenue than usual, thus giving you the opportunity to make higher profits.

3. Increased Productivity and Focus

Time is often the most precious resource in a micro business. Whilst it is always possible to make more money the amount of people time you have in a business is going to be fairly fixed (unless you hire someone new). With that in mind, you’ll want to ensure that time is used as productively as possible. When you annual plan, the focus is clear. Everyone knows what the focus is and it makes it easy to realise what is an essential task, and what is a nice-to-have, but ultimately non-essential and therefore not needed.

4. Long-Term Stability and Growth

If you want year-on-year growth, it makes sense to look at the year as a whole, not just look at how your business is performing on a month-by-month or quarter-by-quarter basis. Most businesses experience seasonality (some more than others) and annual planning allows you to properly account for your seasonality. You’ll map out how to create year-on-year growth even though your business will still experience seasonality. That means focusing on how you maximise peak periods and minimise slow periods. This doesn’t mean the seasonality disappears and you generate the same level of revenue or have the same amount of clients/customers each month. Instead, you’ll make decisions and take action that mean yes there is still seasonality, but overall your business is still growing year-on-year, and now in a way where you understand the seasonality and so aren’t chasing after false stability (such as hitting the same K month each month).

5. Clarity and Confidence

Annual planning will mean that you know what your version of success looks like. It will be defined and you’ll have clear goals that you are aiming towards. And on top of that, you’ll have strategically chosen your route to a goal. Lots of goals can be achieved in multiple ways. For example, for a financial goal there is a whole array of offerings you could decide to sell to hit that goal. And for a sales goal there is a whole array of marketing channels and tactics you could try. This is why it is so easy to be overwhelmed as a business owner. There are lots of options. But when you take the time to properly create an annual plan you’ll have considered the main options and then decided this is the route the business is going to take. You’ll have a route and a reason. This will give you a level of clarity and confidence that means you can wholly commit to what you are doing, but also you don’t get worry or get sidetracked by other options.

6. Freedom

A major benefit of annual planning is experiencing more freedom in your business (if that is what you want). Lots of business owners think that planning, process and structure is going to cage them in, but far from it, especially when you do annual planning with me where you take a life first, business second approach.

When you are honest about the freedom you want to experience in your business, you can plan for that to be a reality.
