As a business owner it’s easy to think you’ll work forever and who knows maybe…

If you’re reading this blog post, I’m going to assume you’re ambitious, but have you properly realised that not everyone in business is as ambitious as you? Because it’s easy when you are ambitious to think everyone else is too. In fact, you might even have conversations with other business owners who describe themselves as an ambitious business owner, but you quickly realise their version of ambitious is very different to yours. If you want to fulfil your potential in your business you have to realise sooner rather than later that people get into business for all sorts of reasons and want to achieve all sorts of things through their business. Not everyone in business is as ambitious as you. Not everyone in business wants to achieve as much as you. And the sooner you realise that, the better, as I’ll explain.

NOT EVERYONE IN BUSINESS IS AS AMBITIOUS AS YOU ARE AND THE SOONER YOU REALISE THAT, THE BETTER
The problem with the word ambitious
Anyone can describe themselves as ambitious. But someone telling you that they are ambitious doesn’t actually tell you what they are trying to achieve. The reality is people consider themselves to be ambitious if they want to achieve more than the “average”. But average is relative. Someone can be the most ambitious person in their family or in their friendship group, but to you wouldn’t count what they are trying to achieve as ambitious. So even if someone says they are an ambitious business owner, it doesn’t mean automatically they are going to have the same level of ambition as you.
People build businesses for all sorts of reasons
This might sound obvious, but people get into business for many different reasons. Especially given that it is easier than ever before to start a business, more and more people are deciding to start a business and see what happens.
Someone might want:
- A business that stays a side hustle, so they have an extra income stream alongside their job
- To freelance, make under 100k and have great flexibility
- A six- or seven-figure micro-business with them as the face of the business
- To grow a business to the point it has multiple offices nationally or internationally
- To start a franchise
- A business that can eventually operate without them
- Their business to go public
- A business that they can sell
- A seven- or eight-figure business that supports them building significant personal wealth
- To build a startup company that becomes a unicorn
- To be the next Google, Apple or Facebook
That’s just some examples of the different things people can want from their business. All are legitimate goals. But as you can tell, they are very different. There is a big difference between someone who wants an extra income, someone who wants flexibility, someone who wants offices in multiple locations, someone who wants external investment and someone who wants to ultimately sell up.
The goal someone has for their business not only shows you how ambitious they are, but it is also impacts the game they are playing in business. And understanding that people are playing different games in business is so important.
The danger in not realising everyone isn’t as ambitious as you
When you don’t realise, or don’t remember, that everyone isn’t as ambitious as you, you can put yourself in some tricky, and costly, situations. I know this because I have been there.
You go to a networking event and quickly realise everyone is pretty content with where they are. There is no drive, no hunger and no real conversation around growing or improving your business.
You join a membership or mastermind all excited, but then discover that because the majority of the business owners aren’t as ambitious as you, the conversations, and the teaching, aren’t at a high enough level.
You buy a ticket for a conference (before the agenda is released based purely on the brand) and find yourself listening to talks that are too beginner and no one else is aiming for the same level as you.
In some of these situations, you’ve paid good money to be in those rooms, to have those conversations or to get that support. So it’s costed you money. But on top of that something else happens, it can make you think ‘Am I aiming too high?’ and it can even make you start playing smaller.
I don’t want that too happen to you. Even if I don’t know you, I know that you aren’t too ambitious. It’s just that you are putting yourself in the wrong places and interactinvg with the wrong type of business owners. They aren’t bad places. They aren’t bad business places. They just aren’t right for you.
How ambitious are you? Where are you trying to get to next?
As discussed, being surrounded by the wrong business owners and going to the wrong events is costing you money and can be playing havoc with your mindset too. But in order to surround yourself with business owners who are ambitious as you you and put yourself in the right rooms you need to do know these two things.
1 – How ambitious are you really?
What do you ultimately want to achieve in your business? If you didn’t think someone would judge you for the answer how would you reply? Your answer might include the revenue/profit you’d like to make, the size of team you’d like, the geographical spread etc. You don’t have to tell anyone this (for now), but being honest with yourself so you can have that in the back of your mind is key.
2 – Where are you trying to get to next?
It might be that you have big dreams for your business, but you aren’t just one step away yet. For example, if ultimately you want an eight-figure business, but right now you don’t even have a seven-figure business then it wouldn’t make sense for the majority of your time to be spent surrounding yourself with people and consuming information for wannabe eight-figure businesses. You can indulge in a bit from time to time, but the main focus should be on where you are heading to next so get clear on that.
Once you’ve got both of those things written down, then you can go start to actively look at how to surround yourself with the right people, put yourself in the right rooms and get the right support for your level of ambition.

Finding the right support and people for your version of ambitious
We’ve established that not everyone in business is ambitious as you. You know the dangers of when you around people who aren’t as ambitious as you and now you are clear on your ultimate ambitions, as well as where you are trying to head next.
So now it’s time to actually get the right support and right people for your version of ambitious.
Networking
There are networking groups and opportunities for every type of business owner. Your job is to be more selective. Pay attention to the marketing. Who are they trying to appeal to? Do you think that will genuinely bring in the people you should be networking with?
Then on your first visit pay attention to not just who is there, but the type of conversations that are being had? It easy to leave thinking you had nice conversations, but were the conversations valuable? Did you feel as if they were at the right level? Are there people you’d love to talk to more?
Events
In-person business events are on the rise at the moment. You have more choice than every before so you absolutely should be able to find events that are right for you.
Pay close attention to who is running the event. The host of the event, their vibe and their core marketing messaging will play a big role on who attends (especially if other speakers and / or the agenda hasn’t been announced).
If the agenda is up, look at it. Are the sessions ones that feel right for the stage of business you are at, and most importantly, for where you want to be going?
Mastermind or Membership
If you go to the wrong event, you might waste some money and a few days. In the grand scheme of things, it isn’t that bad. But if you end up in a mastermind or membership where people aren’t as ambitious as you, you can end up losing thousands, as well as being around the wrong people for an extended period of time, which is really damaging.
Similar to with events you want to pay close attention to the host. With a membership or mastermind people are signing up for a combination of who the membership or mastermind is meant to support, and who the host is. So be sure to do your due diligence and find out as much as you can about the host and think about who they’ll be attracting.
With the mastermind or membership promise pay attention to whether it’s positioned for business owners at a certain level or wanting to get to a certain level. When there are requirements to join combined with aspiration level, rather than just focusing on the aspiration level then you’ll have a better chance of ending up with the right type of people.
Mentors or coaches
Investing in working with a mentor or coach isn’t something to take lightly. Similarly to memberships and masterminds you’ll be working with a coach or mentor for an extended period of time, so you want to make sure they are the right person for you.
When choosing your mentor or coach, share your goals with them. Make sure you are confident to fully express your ambition and that they are confident in their ability to support you in reaching that level. Have they grown their business to that level or have they supported others at that point?
