MAKE THIS THE YEAR THAT CHANGES YOUR BUSINESS FOREVER

What do you really want your business to be like?

Before you can have a year that changes your business forever, and changes it in the best way possible, you have to be brutally honest about what you really want. The likelihood is that your dreams for your business have changed since you first started your business. But have you acknowledged that?

Maybe you thought you wanted to work with a certain type of client, but now you’ve realised you don’t enjoy working with them. Maybe you thought you’d love to work in a certain way, but it’s less enjoyable than you thought. Maybe you are now in a different season of life and need your business to support you differently. Maybe you’ve now seen the ways other businesses are operating and realised there are opportunities that you didn’t even know existed before.

The world is changing. You are changing. But you need to take a moment to acknowledge in this moment of time, what you would love your business to be like. Think 3 years, 5 years, or even 10 years from now. The more detailed you can be, the better. Don’t let being ‘realistic’ hold you back in this moment. This is about owning what you want. Because you never own your deepest dreams, then you definitely aren’t going to make them happen.

Where does your business need to be a year from now?

When I’m helping clients with setting their goals, I’ll often talk about the concept of goals acting as stepping stones. They are bridging the gap from one side of a river to the other. From where your business is right now to where you want it to be. Now that you have a clear idea of what you really want your business to be like, it’s time to take a step backwards and work out where your business needs to be in a year from now. This should be somewhere in between where your business is now and where you ultimately want it to be. Let’s be real, most people aren’t able to create their dream business in a year, but if you want to make this the year that changes your business forever, it’s about ensuring the year is used as a springboard year. It’s about using the year to ensure that by the end, your business is perfectly positioned to achieve your ultimate business. At this stage, the aim is to identify the key elements of your business that need to change and where you want them to be in a year.

Create an annual plan

To make this the year that changes your business forever, you are going to have to make strategic decisions and take intentional action, and to start you off on the right path, to do that all year, the best thing you can do is create an annual plan. At this point you’ve already started to thinking about where you want your business to be a year from now. But it’s time to get more precise and actual set concrete goals. And then create a plan for how you are going to achieve those goals.

Embrace long-term thinking

You’ve got a long-term vision and you’ve got goals and a plan for the year ahead, but if your default has been short-term thinking to date, then it’s easy in the moment to make decisions for the short-term, rather than the long-term. To ensure you make this the year that changes your business forever, you’ll have to stick to keeping the long-term vision in mind and making your decisions based on that, not the long-term.

What does this actually look like in reality? It can mean that when sales are slow, you don’t jump to creating a new offer or running a discount because these may fill the goal of creating a short-term spike income, but can mean you have a disjointed offer in your offer suite or you’re running your brand by discounting. It can mean you turning away non-dream clients because whilst in the short-term it could be good money for your business, ultimately the long-term aim is to focus on working with dream clients so you have those clients as case studies and testimonials, which will pull in more dream clients, and they’ll refer you to other dream clients.

It can mean investing in your own growth, perhaps upskilling in a specific area that will help your business grow, and thinking about the return on investment over the months and years ahead, rather than the duration of the programme or support.  It can mean closing offers that are no longer aligned and even though that can have an impact on your income in the short-term, you keep focused on the bigger picture and the offer suite you ultimately want to have.

It can mean creating a loss leader (like an event) where you make a loss initially, but knowing that it’s worth it in the long-term due to a client’s lifetime value.

As you can hopefully see from those examples, if you are used to thinking short-term, rather than long-term, there are going to be moment where you want to decide to take the ‘quick win’ or focus on what makes sense right now. But to make this the year that your business changes forever you have to stay focused on thinking long-term and ensuring your decisions and actions are aligned with your long-term vision.

Invest in long-term business support

You’ve got a plan for the year ahead, but the likelihood is that if you want to make this the year that changes your business forever, that plan will involve you having to do things outside your comfort zone, or things you don’t even know how to do yet. And as shown when discussing long-term thinking the reality is even with the best intentions at the beginning of the year when creating your plan throughout the year, you’ll be tested. Over and over again, you’ll have to make decisions that will challenge you to either stick with your long-term vision or switch back to short-term. Because of this, long-term support is invaluable.

Having a business mentor or coach to support you for the year will help ensure you stick to your annual goals and plan, that you improve your business where you need to, and that when those mid-year decisions have to be made, you have someone to help you keep on the long-term thinking track. The power of business mentoring and coaching is well-reported, but specifically if you want to make this the year that changes your business forever, you’ll want to get support for the whole year. You want someone who properly understands what you are trying to achieve and can support you throughout the whole year.

I swear by the power of getting support for a full year, which is why I offer one-to-one mentoring and my mastermind as year-long commitments. If you’re interested in either DM me on Instagram or LinkedIn saying YEAR and I’ll share the details.

Review, refine and optimise

In an attempt to change your business forever, you are going to be trying new things. Your job as a business owner isn’t to get your head down and just work, work, work. Sadly, that isn’t what will allow you to create the business of your dreams. Instead, you are going to need to do the work, but then stop and assess what’s happened based on the actions you’ve taken. You’ll need to be reviewing your performance and then as a result refining and optimising. The faster you can take action and then understand the impact, the faster your business will move forward. Reviewing your progress is essential work. Never forget that.

That’s it. You know now how to make this the year that changes your business forever.

I’ve shared what you need to do in order to make this the year that changes your business forever. The steps are simple enough, but just because they are simple doesn’t mean you’ll do them. Success in business leaves clues, but many people ignore them and try even though there are tried-and-tested ways to reinvent the wheel.
