1. Claim Your Website

Even if you aren’t currently using Pinterest as a marketing channel I would still advise that you open an account and claim your website. You might change your mind in the future and it would be awful to have missed out on your preferred handle. Also, by claiming your website it means you’ll gain attribution even if someone else creates a Pin for a page on your website.

Due to the number of different platforms people use to build a website there are a number of ways that you can claim your website. The best thing to do is refer to Pinterest official advice on claiming your website.

Once you have claimed your website you should be able to see it in the settings sections.

2. Always include a vertical image in your blog posts

If you are creating high-value content (blogs, podcasts episodes or videos) on your website that are helpful then you need to ensure on that page you have a vertical image. Anyone can create a Pin for any (almost) any page on the internet. However, Pinterest Pins are meant to be vertical. This means if someone decides they loved your blog post and want to pin it to a relevant board and then they only have the square images they might decide not to pin it. Or they may decide to pin it but because it isn’t optimise for Pinterest is will mean the likelihood of it being repined is reduced.

Even if you aren’t on Pinterest make it easy for your content to be shared on the platform. Get into the habit of always having a vertical image on your blog posts. You can put it all the way at the bottom so only your avid readers see it, but it still means a Pinterest lover will have something to pin.

3. Add a Pinterest save button

Have you ever been on a website and noticed when you scrolled over a red save image appears. If you click on that image you’d be able to quickly save it straight to Pinterest. Therefore, if you’ve gone to the effort of now including a vertical image on every blog post then why not make it super easy for people to pin that image.

4. Add social sharing buttons to your website

Now if you’ve put your vertical images at the bottom of your blog post you might think no one will ever scroll that far to even see that image. Another way that you can help other people to easily share your content on social media in general and on Pinterest is by adding social sharing buttons.

Social sharing buttons can often be found at the top, bottom or side of a blog post or at the end. When someone clicks on the buttons it will quickly help them to share that webpage on their social media channels.

The majority of social sharing buttons will have the option to pin on Pinterest. I personally use AddThis, however, there are lots of plugins for WordPress websites so it is best to check and find one that works for your specific needs.

5. Make it easy for people to follow you on Pinterest

Whilst growing your followers on Pinterest isn’t important (Pinterest is a search engine, rather than a social media) you should still make it easy for people to be able to follow you if they wish to do so.

If you have your social media profiles linked to in your header or footer makes sure to include Pinterest too.

Also, you can install a Pinterest widget in your blog sidebar. You can create your widget using Pinterest’s tool.

There you have it! You know how to optimise your website for Pinterest.
