What is the difference between a Marketing Strategist, Marketing Consultant, Marketing Coach and Marketing Mentor?

Before we delve into how a Marketing Strategist can benefit your business, I wanted to share my thoughts on the various titles within the marketing world. If you have been looking for 1-to-1 support from a marketing expert then you may have come across people calling themselves a Marketing Strategist, Marketing Consultant, Marketing Coach or Marketing Mentor and thought “What is the difference?”

Unfortunately, I can’t give you a concrete answer. Whilst there might be definitions of the work Strategist, Consultant, Coach and Mentor it doesn’t mean that people are following those definitions. You will likely find two people with different titles offering the same service. Therefore, if you know you want 1-to-1 support my advice is to focus on what you need rather than what they call themselves. Look at the service people are providing and ensure that matches your actual needs.

What is a Marketing Strategist?

My favourite definition of a strategist is from Collins Dictionary. It states that A strategist is someone who is skilled in planning the best way to gain an advantage or to achieve success, especially in war.”

I believe that a Marketing Strategist is focused on helping a business to achieve success (aka the business goals) through marketing. They will analyse the entire situation (internal and external) and create a plan that is designed to maximise the business’ chance of succeeding.

Hopefully, you are now clear on what a Marketing Strategist so I’ll now share the benefits of hiring a Marketing Strategist.

1. Marketing Strategists save you time

If there is one thing most business owners are tight of it is time. Whether you want to be spending your time in others parts of your business (actually delivering your service) or have more time to enjoy your life it is likely that you don’t want to spend more time marketing your business.

Working with a good Marketing Strategist will save you time for a number of reasons. Firstly, once you have worked together you’ll be confident with your marketing strategy and will therefore stop wasting time thinking about whether you are taking the right actions or not. Secondly, the Marketing Strategist should have created a strategy that means you are focusing your energy on marketing in ways that produce the best return-on-investment (ROI) in terms of both money and time. Thirdly, a Marketing Strategist will be able to recommend tools, software and systems that will help improve your efficiency.

2. They’ll analyse your current marketing

When was the last time you analysed your marketing? The first thing I do with new clients is analyse their current marketing. It is easy to get caught up in the day-to-day of marketing your business and not taking the time out to actually analyse how your marketing is performing. Now maybe you don’t currently have the time or maybe you don’t class yourself as a number person and so avoid them. Either way, a Marketing Strategist will be able to analyse your current marketing and provide insightful feedback on what has and hasn’t been working so far.

3. You’ll have access to a marketing expert

Now, this might seem obvious, but a good Marketing Strategist should be a marketing expert. They should be passionate about marketing and as a result, they should eat, sleep and breath all thing marketing and advertising. Ideally, a marketing strategist will have a combination of strong knowledge and experience to draw from and by hiring a Marketing Strategist you’ll gain access to that expertise.

In addition to having real-life experience, most Marketing Strategists will also have professional qualifications. For example, I have a Professional Diploma in Marketing (awarded by the Chartered Institute of Marketing) and am also a Chartered Marketer.

The benefit to you and your business is that with all this knowledge you are likely to get exposed to marketing strategies and / or tactics that you wouldn’t have come across otherwise.

4. They’ll give you personalised recommendations (no more generic advice)

Having access to an expert is great but you could get this by joining a membership. The real benefit of working with a Marketing Strategist is that expert is working with you 1-to-1 and will be using their expertise to provide personalised recommendations.

When it comes to marketing your business there are so many options and endless amounts of information created on each option. For example, imagine that you’ve decided that you should be using Instagram to market your business. What do you do next? Listen to a podcast, watch a YouTube video, sign up for a course or join a membership. All of these options can potentially help you. However, they will be giving generic advice.

When you work with a Marketing Strategist you can are getting personalised recommendations. They will have an understanding of your business, your target market, your competitors and your resources. They’ll be able to make all of their recommendations based on that information. This means not only will the recommendation make sense for your business, but it will be manageable ie no more strategies that require more time or money than you have.

When you are a solo or small business owner you are likely to be all consumed by your business. Essentially it is your baby! You work on it day and day out and therefore everything seems obvious to you. When you work with a Marketing Strategist you are gaining access to a fresh set of eyes and another perspective.

The fresh eyes mean they are able to look at your marketing in the same way that a new prospect will and this makes it easier for them to see the mistakes that are currently holding your business back.

Another perspective, and brain, is also invaluable for small and solo business owners. It means you are able to share your ideas and have some feedback. This will ultimately help you to decide whether the idea should be implemented, refined or dismissed.

6. Marketing Strategists will create your marketing plan

Are you someone that is great at following a plan but struggle to create the plan in the first place? As I mentioned right at the beginning a strategist is skilled at planning. This is where they thrive.

A strategist will happily do the necessary analysis and evaluating and then create a marketing plan specifically for your business. This means you can be confident that you have a strong marketing plan and are investing your resources (time, money and energy) into what matters most.

7. A Marketing Strategist can help you to outsource or grow your team

If you are like the majority of small and solo business owners I work with you are doing your marketing at the moment because you have to, not because you want to. You have every intention as your business grow to start outsourcing your marketing or building your own marketing team. Outsourcing can be a very stressful process. When you work with a Marketing Strategist you can tap into their network. Since marketing is their industry, they are likely to know lots of other professionals in the industry that specialise in other areas such as designers, copywriters, social media managers and FB ads managers.
