It is easy if you aren’t on track with your business goals to become frustrated and / or demotivated. However, those feelings aren’t going to help you achieve your business goals in the long run. If you aren’t on track with your business goals it doesn’t mean that you can’t achieve your business goals at all. Depending on the situation you might be able to get back on track or you might need to change the deadline in order to give you more time. Here is how to work out what you need to do.

First you need to establish why you aren’t on track with your business goals

If you aren’t on track with your business goals then there are usually two reasons. Firstly, it could be because you haven’t been taking the necessary actions. Secondly, you could have been taking all of the actions you thought you should be taking, but not getting the results.

If you haven’t been taking the necessary actions

If you haven’t been taking the necessary actions you need to ask yourself “Do I still want to achieve this goal?”. If the answer is no then take the goal off your goals list. Goals change over time and there is nothing wrong with that. If you truly don’t want to achieve a specific business goal any more, let it go so you can be free to focus on what you really want to achieve in your business.

If you do still want to achieve the goal ask yourself “Why haven’t I been taking the necessary action?”. There could be a number of reasons why you aren’t taking the necessary actions:

  • You haven’t been making the time
  • You are lazy
  • You are procrastinating
  • You aren’t confident in your ability to do the necessary things
  • You aren’t good at holding yourself accountable
  • You want everything to be perfect
  • You have a fear around what will happen as a result of you doing the necessary actions

Understanding why you haven’t been taking the necessary actions will allow you to work out what you need to do next. In some cases you’ll need to do some mindset work to help you get over your fears or to allow you get comfortable with everything not being ‘perfect’. In other cases you may need to work with someone who can help you work out how to fit executing the plan into your life and also hold you accountable.

If you know that you aren’t on track with your business goals because you are struggling to follow through on your intentions and you would like support to make the best plan possible and then and then be held accountable for following the plan then let’s have a chat about working together.

If you have been taking the necessary actions

If you have been taking the necessary actions then it can be harder to feel as if you aren’t on track with your business goals. You’ve been putting in the work so to not see the results is hard. In this situation you need to work out whether you are making progress, but slower than you would like and therefore you might just need to give yourself some more time. Or you might feel as if you aren’t making any progress and need to totally rethink your plan for achieving your business goals.

Recreate your plan

With all the best will in the world, plans don’t always work as expected. I’m sure when you originally set your goals and created the action plan you did your best. However, sometimes you have to make a new plan. Now depending on your specific situation you might recreate your plan with just a few tweaks from originally or you might create a whole new plan.

Get some form of accountability

The likelihood is that your business goals will require you to step outside of your comfort zone and if that is the case in your situation then you should definitely consider getting accountability. When we set a goal and don’t tell anyone it is easy to let ourselves off the hook. External accountability will mean you know that someone else is checking in on you and if you get a good (aka) strict person to hold you accountable (like myself) then you are more likely to take the actions so you don’t have to have your check-in and say you didn’t do it.

Monitor your progress regularly

Hopefully since you’ve fallen off track already you understand the importance of monitoring your progress regularly. The further away a goal’s deadline is the more important it is to ensure you are monitoring your progress and where possible you have milestones set. This will allow you to notice sooner rather than later if your new plan isn’t creating the results you want.

There you have it! You now know what to do when you aren’t on track with your goals.

Falling behind with your goals isn’t fun, but it doesn’t have to be the end of the world either. By taking a good look to understand why you aren’t on track there is no reason why you can’t turn the situation around and still achieve your business goals in the future.
